We work in partnership

We work in partnership

to build access to books, together
Just Be a Child Kenya receives books from the UK and works tirelessly to turn them into lasting opportunities for children and communities. We create and support community-operated libraries, run by local volunteers and rooted in local need. Through trusted partnerships, we also distribute books to schools, organisations, and projects that make reading accessible to children and the wider public.

Everything we do is driven by collaboration, care, and a shared belief that access to books can change lives.
We are inspired by books. Strengthened by community.

We are inspired by books. Strengthened by community.

The Books we Share

The Books we Share

Where they come from. where they are send.
Our Books Origins

Our books are donated in the UK to Just be a Child UK, where volunteers carefully select and sort each one before shipping them to Kenya. Once received, the collection is organised to meet real community needs, including children’s storybooks, children’s non-fiction, adult fiction, adult non-fiction, and textbooks for learners at all levels. This careful process ensures every book is purposeful, relevant, and ready to be read.

Anyone running a school, orphanage, or community project who is looking for a small number of books is welcome to apply. While the books themselves are provided free of charge, we ask for a small contribution towards transport costs to help us deliver them sustainably. This allows us to reach more projects, more communities, and more readers.

Larger quantities of books are available for organisations looking to stock libraries with 1,000 books or more. Projects can be based anywhere in Kenya and must serve the general public, regardless of the organisation type. Community centres, schools, prisons, and hospitals are all welcome to apply, helping ensure books reach readers wherever they are needed most.

Our Rural Reading Rooms competition is currently open to students of the University of Nairobi. However, if you’re interested in learning more about the programme or future opportunities, we’d love to hear from you — please get in touch to start a conversation.
